Variety of Aizuchi
「はい」
polite saying
＊Caution: if you say twice continuously, it could turn the meaning to “Don’t want to listen anymore”.
「うん」
Same meaning with (hai). Casual. Used to friends.
「はあ？」
Show that you are skeptical.
＊Caution: It could sound defiant.
うなずく（nodding）
Show that you are listening and agreeing by nodding.
「ええ」
Ee↘is same meaning with Hai. Ee↗ is for when you are surprised.
「へえ」
Hee is for when you are impressed.
「ほんとう」
Hontou↘ is for when you show sympathy.
There is more phrases which changes the meaning depending on the intonation.
「そうですか」
「そうですか↘」I understood.
「そうですか↗」Questioning.
「そうですか→」I’m thinking about it…
「そうですか↘↗」Is that so?(skeptical)

When to use Aizuchi
- End of sentences
- After conjunctions
- After conjunction particles
＊Aizuchi should be said after the speaker finished talking. It will cut off the talk if you do Aizuchi before the speaker is done.
