Variety of Aizuchi
「はい」
polite saying
*Caution: if you say twice continuously, it could turn the meaning to “Don’t want to listen anymore”.
「うん」
Same meaning with (hai). Casual. Used to friends.
「はあ?」
Show that you are skeptical.
*Caution: It could sound defiant.
うなずく(nodding)
Show that you are listening and agreeing by nodding.
「ええ」
Ee↘is same meaning with Hai. Ee↗ is for when you are surprised.
「へえ」
Hee is for when you are impressed.
「ほんとう」
Hontou↘ is for when you show sympathy.
There is more phrases which changes the meaning depending on the intonation.
「そうですか」
「そうですか↘」I understood.
「そうですか↗」Questioning.
「そうですか→」I’m thinking about it…
「そうですか↘↗」Is that so?(skeptical)

When to use Aizuchi
- End of sentences
- After conjunctions
- After conjunction particles
*Aizuchi should be said after the speaker finished talking. It will cut off the talk if you do Aizuchi before the speaker is done.
