A voiced sound will vibrate the glottis which is located in the throat. While continually pronounce the sound “z”, you can feel the vibration when placing your finger on the throat. An unvoiced sound is pronounced with less vibration of the glottis. While continually pronouncing the “s” sound you can feel that there is no vibration when you place your finger on your throat. In Japanese “ta”, “ka”, “pa” are unvoiced, whereas “da”, “ga”, and “ba” are voiced. (Vowels are usually voiced sounds). The voice of the sound in a word will change the meaning. For example, the word “gakkou” means school, whereas the word “kakkou” means style. Likewise, “tenki” means weather, whereas, “denki” means electricity.
