Vowels and Consonants

Vowels are pronounced by pushing air through mouth without hindering the air flow. In contrast, consonants are pronounced by impeding the flow of the air through the mouth with the tongue, lips, or teeth. The Japanese vowels A, I, U, E, O, are pronounced by altering the shape of the mouth When pronouncing the vowel + consonant combination “ma”, the lips are closed while producing the sound. In the case of “sa”, the air is pushed through a small gap between the tongue and the roof of the mouth. If there is a consonant vowel combination that you find difficult to pronounce, it is useful to check how the sound is pronounced by looking at the shape and position of the mouth and tongue.
